As there has been a church on the site of St. Mary's since the 11th Century it is understandable that it will have been involved in the history of many local families down the centuries. However, all the records of Marriages, Baptisms and Burials, apart from the most recent, have been moved to the County Records Office at The Keep,Woollards Way, Brighton, BN1 9BP, www.thekeep.info. That office should, therefore, be the first point of contact for people wanting to research their family's history in Eastbourne. It can be contacted by telephoning 01273 482349 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
The chuchyard here at St. Mary's is designated as a 'closed' churchyard which means that no more burials can take place and responsibility for its maintenance has passed to the Local Authority. When the churchyard was closed most of the headstones were moved to the perimeter: Many of these very old stones have been eroded over the years and can no longer be read.
