As there has been a church on the site of St. Mary's since the 11th Century it is understandable that it will have been involved in the history of many local families down the centuries. However, all the records of Marriages and Baptisms and Burials, apart from the most recent, have been moved to the County Records Office in Lewes. That office should, therefore, be the first point of contact for people wanting to research their family's history in Eastbourne. It can be contacted at www.eastsussex.gov.uk/atoz or by telephoning
The chuchyard here at St. Mary's is designated as a 'closed' churchyard which means
that no more burials can take place and responsibility for its maintenance has passed
to the Local Authority. When the churchyard was closed most of the headstones
were moved to the perimeter: Many of these very old stones have been eroded
over the years and can no longer be read.
